The Story Behind FIVE

Every project has a beginning.

FIVE began long before the first recording session.

It started with three voices, countless rehearsals, hundreds of kilometres travelled and one shared ambition: creating an authentic country a cappella sound unlike anything else in Switzerland.

Over five years, Voice Free refined its identity through live performances, experimentation and continuous artistic growth. Every arrangement, every harmony and every recording reflects that journey.

Rather than chasing trends, the band chose to build something timeless. FIVE is the result of patience, collaboration and a commitment to craftsmanship.

More than an album, it represents a milestone — the first complete expression of the Voice Free sound.

Lyrics

(Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh)
(Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh)
(Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh)
(Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh)

Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
End up like a dog that’s been beat too much
‘Til you spend half your life just coverin’ up now

(Born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
(Born) born in the USA

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the fellow men

(Born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
(Born) born in the USA

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says, “Son, if it was up to me”
Went down to see my VA man
He said, “Son, don’t you understand?”

(Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh)

I had a brother at Khe Sanh
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They’re still there, he’s all gone
(Born in the USA)

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now
(Born in the USA) oh, no
(Born in the USA) hey, hey

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery now
Ten years burnin’ down that road
Nowhere to run, nowhere to go

Born in the USA
Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I’m a long-gone daddy in the USA

I’m (Born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I’m a cool (born) rockin’ daddy in the USA

I’m (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I’m a long-gone daddy in the USA

I’m (Born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I’m a cool rockin’ daddy in the USA

I’m (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I was (born) born in the USA
I’m a long-gone daddy in the USA Now

Lyrics

You may think that I’m talkin’ foolish
You’ve heard that I’m wild, and I’m free
You may wonder how I can promise you now
This love that I feel for you always will be

But you’re not just time that I’m killin’
I’m no longer one of those guys
As sure as I live, this love that I give
Is gonna be yours until the day that I die

Oh, baby, I’m gonna love you forever
Forever and ever, amen
As long as old men sit and talk about the weather
As long as old women sit and talk about old men
If you wonder how long I’ll be faithful
I’ll be happy to tell you again
I’m gonna love you forever and ever
Forever and ever, amen

They say time takes its toll on a body
Makes the young girl’s brown hair turn gray
But honey, I don’t care, I ain’t in love with your hair
And if it all fell out, well, I’d love you anyway

They say time can play tricks on a memory
Make people forget things they knew
Well it’s easy to see, it’s happenin’ to me
I’ve already forgotten every woman but you

Oh, darlin’, I’m gonna love you forever
Forever and ever amen
As long as old men sit and talk about the weather
As long as old women sit and talk about old men
If you wonder how long I’ll be faithful
Well just listen to how this song ends
I’m gonna love you forever and ever
Forever and ever, amen

Yeah, i’m gonna love you forever and ever
Forever and ever, forever and ever
Forever and ever,
Amen

Lyrics

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue ridge mountains, Shenandoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gather ’round her
Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice, in the morning hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And driving down the road I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

Take me home, that country roads

Lyrics

Yeah, love
Is a burning thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher

And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire
The ring of fire
The ring
Of fire

Lyrics

Doo-doo-do-do, whoa
Doo-doo-do-do, whoa
Doo-doo-do-do, whoa
Doo-doo-do-do

There’s a calm before the storm
In the deep blue of your eyes
So many danger signs
I’ve come to recognize

I should go, but I hold on
And swallow back my pride
Leaving should be natural
But how can I decide ?

Between a rock (between a rock)
And a heartache
There is just no place left to turn
Way down deep (way down deep), I know I can’t win
With the choice I’ve got to make
Between a rock and a heartache

Doo-doo-do-do, whoa
Doo-doo-do-do, whoa

Every morning when I wake up
Rise to face the day
I swear this time is over
There’s nothing left to say (nothing left to say)

You call me up sweet-talking
Say, “Can we be friends ?”
Even though its crazy
I know I am trapped again

Between a rock (between a rock)
And a heartache
There is just no place left to turn
Way down deep (way down deep), I know I can’t win
With the choice I’ve got to make
Between a rock and a heartache

I look to heaven and all I see is bad news
It tears me up to know I’ve got to choose

Between a rock (between a rock)
And a heartache
There is just no place left to turn
Way down deep (way down deep), I know I can’t win
With the choice I’ve got to make
Between a rock and a heartache

Between a rock
And a heartache
There is just no place left to turn
Way down deep (way down deep), I know I can’t win (I can’t win)
With the choice I’ve got to make
Between a rock and a heartache
Between a rock and a heartache
Between a rock and a heartache
(between a rock and a heartache)

Lyrics

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

I messed up tonight, I lost another fight
I still messed up but I’ll just start again
I keep falling down, I keep on hitting the ground
I always get up now to see what’s next
Birds don’t just fly, they fall down and get up
Nobody learns without getting it wrong

I won’t give up, no I won’t give in
Till I reach the end and then I’ll start again
No I won’t leave, I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I can fail

I won’t give up, no I won’t give in
Till I reach the end and then I’ll start again
No I won’t leave, I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I can fail

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Look at how far you’ve come
You filled your heart with love
Baby you’ve done enough, take a deep breath
Don’t beat yourself up, no need to run so fast
Sometimes we come in last, but we did our best (yeah)

I won’t give up, no I won’t give in
Till I reach the end and then I’ll start again
No I won’t leave, I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I can fail

I won’t give up, no I won’t give in
Till I reach the end and then I’ll start again
No I won’t leave, I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I can fail

I’ll keep on making those new mistakes
I’ll keep on making them everyday
Those new mistakes

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Try everything

Lyrics

I keep hearin’ you’re concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you’re givin’ me is conscience I guess
If I was walkin’ in your shoes, I wouldn’t worry none
While you ‘n’ your friends are worryin’ about me, I’m havin’ lots of fun

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all (bother me at all)
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of fifty-one (fifty-one)
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (I’ve nothin’ to do)

Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it’s hard to slow this swinger down
So please don’t give a thought to me, I’m really doin’ fine
Weel You can always find me here, I’m havin’ quite a time

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all (bother me at all)
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of fifty-one (fifty-one)
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (I’ve nothin’ to do)

Well, it’s good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room, and make my day complete

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all (bother me at all)
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of fifty-one (fifty-one)
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (got nothin’ to do)

Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (got nothin’ to do)

Lyrics

I’ve seen rain on the Mississippi Delta
I’ve seen the sun rise on Baton Rouge
But of all the things these eyes have seen
Baby, nothing compares to you

Well I heard some tales from an old man in Jackson
‘Bout a sacred place in Tennessee
Where music fills the air and love is everywhere
A boy like me could never leave

You know me, I had to see it for myself
So I hit the road and took your heart along
And those cowboys play those strings in ways I’ve never seen
But I only heard your song

I’ve seen rain on the Mississippi Delta
I’ve seen the sun rise on Baton Rouge
But of all the things these eyes have seen
Baby, nothing compares to you

Now night is fallin’ on this crazy little town
And I’m headed out the door
‘Cause I know that all I need is you right here with me
And I’m not leavin’ anymore

I’ve seen rain on the Mississippi Delta
I’ve seen the sun rise on Baton Rouge
But of all the things these eyes have seen
Baby, nothing compares to you
No, nothing compares to you

Baby, nothing compares to you

Lyrics

Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
and ruined you’re black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one you thought you’d see there
I saw the surprise, and the fear in his eyes
when I took his glass of champagne.
And I thought that you said
only we’ve may be through
you’ll never hear me compare.

I got friends in low places
where the whisky drowns
and the beer chases my blues away
and I’ll be okay

I’m not big on social graces
think I’ll slip on down
to the old laces
I got friends in low places

Well I guess I was wrong I just don’t belong
but then, I’ve been there before
everythings allright
I’ll just say good night
and show myself to the door.
And I didn’t mean, to cause a big scene
just give me an hour and then
I’ll be as high as that ivory tower
that you’re living in.

Cause’ I’ve got creames in low places
where the whisky drowns and the beer chases my blues away
and I’ll be okay

I’m not big on social graces
think I’ll slip on down
to the old laces
I got friends in low places.

Well I’ve gotten great in the low places
where the whisky drowns and the beer chases my blues away
and I’ll be okay

I’m not big on social graces
think I’ll slip on down
to the old laces
oh, I got friends in low places

Yeah, I got friends in low places

I got friends in low places

Lyrics

Baby, lock the door and turn the lights down low
Put some music on that’s soft and slow
Baby, we ain’t got no place to go
I hope you understand

I’ve been thinkin’ ’bout this all day long
Never felt a feeling quite this strong
I can’t believe how much it turns me on
Just to be your man (oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)

There’s no hurry (there’s no hurry)
Don’t you worry (don’t you worry)
We can take our time (oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
Come a little closer (come little closer)
Let’s go over (let’s go over)
What I had in mind

Baby, lock the door and turn the lights down low
Put some music on that’s soft and slow
Baby, we ain’t got no place to go
I hope you understand

I’ve been thinking ’bout this all day long
Never felt a feeling quite this strong
I can’t believe how much it turns me on
Just to be your man (oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)

Ain’t nobody, ever love nobody you
The way that I love you (oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
We’re alone now (we’re alone now)
You don’t know how (you don’t know how)
Long I’ve wanted to

Lock the door and turn the lights down low
Put some music on that’s soft and slow
Baby, we ain’t got no place to go
I hope you understand

I’ve been thinking ’bout this all day long
Never felt a feeling that was quite this strong
I can’t believe how much it turns me on (turns me on)
Just to be your man (oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)

I can’t believe how much it turns me on (turns me on)
Just to be your man (just to be your man)

Your man

Lyrics

On a warm summer’s evening
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler
We were both too tired to sleep

So we took turns a-staring
Out the window at the darkness
‘Til boredom overtook us
And he began to speak

He said, “Son, I’ve made a life
Out of readin’ people’s faces
Knowing what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes

So if you don’t mind my saying
I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I’ll give you some advice”

So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light

And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right”

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
Know when to run
You never count your money
When you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’
When the dealing’s done

Every gambler knows
That the secret to surviving
Is knowing what to throw away
Knowing what to keep

‘Cause every hand’s a winner
And every hand’s a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep

And when he finished speaking
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep

And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler, he broke even
And in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
Know when to run
You never count your money
When you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’
When the dealing’s done

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
(And know) and know when to run
You never count your money
(When you’re) when you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’
(When the dealin’) when the dealing’s done

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’
When the dealing’s done

Time enough for countin’
When the dealing’s done

When the dealing’s done
When the dealing’s done
When the dealing’s done
When the dealing’s done
When the dealing’s done

Lyrics

Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw ’em on the floor
Dance in the kitchen ’til the mornin’ light
Louisiana Saturday night

A-waiting in the front yard sitting on a log
A single shot rifle and a one eyed dog
Yonder come my kinfolk, in the moonlight
Louisiana Saturday night

Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw ’em on the floor
Dance in the kitchen ’til the mornin’ light
Louisiana Saturday night

My brother Bill and my other brother Jack
Belly full of beer and a possum in a sack
Fifteen kids in the front porch light
Louisiana Saturday night

When your kinfolk leave and the kids get fed
Me and my woman gonna slip off to bed
Have a little fun when we turn out the lights
Louisiana Saturday night

Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw ’em on the floor
Dance in the kitchen ’til the mornin’ light
Louisiana Saturday night

(Louisiana Saturday night)

Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw ’em on the floor
Dance in the kitchen ’til the mornin’ light
Louisiana Saturday night

Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw ’em on the floor
Dance in the kitchen ’til the mornin’ light

The Voice Free Sound

FIVE brings together the storytelling and energy of modern country music with the freedom of a cappella.

Built entirely around voices, the album explores how rhythm, bass, harmony and emotion can create a complete musical world without relying on a traditional instrumental band.

At the heart of FIVE are three distinct voices working as one.

Each arrangement begins with the song itself: its story, its emotion and the energy that makes it memorable. Voice Free then rebuilds that foundation through vocal bass, layered harmonies, rhythmic patterns and lead vocals, creating an interpretation that remains connected to the original while carrying the group’s own identity.

The bass provides more than depth. It gives the arrangements weight, movement and direction. The harmony voices expand the sound around the melody, while vocal rhythms help reproduce the drive and momentum usually created by drums and instruments.

This approach allows familiar country songs to take on a different dimension. Some tracks remain intimate and direct. Others grow into dense vocal productions designed to feel wide, powerful and energetic. Throughout the album, the objective remains the same: every layer must serve the song.

FIVE also reflects the relationship between studio precision and live performance. The arrangements are developed to sound detailed and immersive in a recording while preserving the human character and stage energy of Voice Free.

The result is a modern country a cappella album shaped by three voices, five years of artistic development and one shared musical identity.

Turning Voices Into a Complete Record

A Conversation With David

Recording an a cappella album involves more than capturing three singers in front of a microphone.

Every voice must find its place within the arrangement. The lead needs clarity and emotion. The harmonies must feel connected without losing their individual character. The vocal bass must provide depth and impact while remaining balanced with the rest of the mix.

Throughout FIVE, the production process focused on preserving the identity of each performance while bringing the individual elements together into a coherent album. Editing, balance, space and dynamics all played an essential role in transforming separate vocal recordings into a complete listening experience.

The objective was not to hide the human voice beneath production. It was to use production to reveal its energy, precision and emotional range.

In this interview, David, the mixing engineer behind FIVE, looks back on the production of the album and the particular challenges of working with a modern country a cappella project.

The conversation explores the relationship between artistic intention and technical decisions, the balance between vocal bass, lead and harmony parts, and the process of giving twelve individual songs a consistent identity.

It also offers a closer look at the collaboration behind the album: how ideas were exchanged, how the arrangements evolved during production and how each track gradually found its final sound.

FIVE combines modern country music with a cappella production.

Instead of relying on a traditional instrumental band, the arrangements are built through lead vocals, layered harmonies, vocal bass and rhythmic vocal elements. This gives the album a country foundation while preserving the identity of a vocal group.

FIVE is created primarily through voices, including lead vocals, harmonies, vocal bass and rhythmic vocal elements. Studio production is used to shape and expand those performances.

FIVE was mixed in collaboration with David Brand, who helped shape the balance, clarity and overall sonic identity of the album.

You can discover more about the process in the official interview, Inside the Making of “FIVE”.
